  1. Tagged my sticks and got the girlfriend to agree to picking my pair for the day. We'll see how it goes next week.
  2. I love this idea. I dig how this gets us out of our comfort zone and makes us focus more. I have several different sets of sticks in my bag that I never use. Like others, my girlfriend wouldn't have a clue, so I believe I'll use a method that @Stephen has suggested for marking pairs and then just randomize it with dice or something. Thanks, Julia!
  3. I was in Bamberg 89-91. 13B FA. German food is one of my favs.
  4. Went and watched an Open Mic Night. Didn't play, but it was cool to watch and think about the possibility of being able to join in.

  5. I played a few instruments when I was younger but never really dedicated myself the way I should have. Trumpet and tuba in school band. Electric guitar as a teen and then again as an adult. Tried the e-drums as well as an adult. Life never really let me pursue music, and I didn't push myself enough. 2 years ago at age 51, and because of the support of my girlfriend I got back into it when I purchased a Yamaha DTX403(I think is the model). Then a friend of mine gave me the PDP kit that was in his storage. Figured out self teaching wasn't working because I didn't know what I was doing anyway, so I came here. Absolutely love playing the drums because I'm a fidget-er and the complexity of drums helps that. I've always liked things that kept me moving and kept my mind occupied.
  6. Not much practice this week due to the flu. All is better now. Started just playing songs on the weekends for a change. Went back to songs I'd practiced with previously. Enjoyed the process. Quite happy with how my routine is coming together.

Hope everyone is well and practicing regularly.

Hi Robert, I’m sorry you weren’t feeling well but glad you’re better.  How is it for you coming back to songs you let go of practicing for a while?  I just posted a question about that topic in the forums.  I don’t think I retain them well in my memory.

Did you mean just playing songs on weekends and saving lesson material for weekdays?  That sounds like a good schedule.  Let me know how it works for you.

  7. If your world rocks, it's cus you know a drummer! 😎 🥁

  8. Morning drum practice. Better than coffee.

  9. I never guessed that playing 'Back In Black' at 50BPM could be so fun and fulfilling. This can be a faster song for the Slow Metal Band, @chantale. 🤘😎🤘

    🤣

slow mo drum faces. I need to make a video. 🤣

My band does 'Billy Jean' 80BPM as a slow ballad. I'd need to hear 'Back in Black' at 50 to believe it.

  10. Just watched one of @Stephen's videos on YouTube talking about burnout. I don't feel burnt out, but maybe I am devoting too much time to drumming which could be holding me back? I do other things to 'recover', but I spend most of my time every day thinking about drumming, listening to music, learning about other drummers, reading about drumming, watching drumming videos, and following drummers on social media. I also try to do FT & HT most every day while still doing my regular practice regularly.

I believe I should try to rest my head head from drumming a bit more. Let's see how this goes.

I'm certainly taking some time to relax my head and get right. I think I'm just way to OCD and too much of a perfectionist.

All of you and this forum has always been a great help. And that's the best thing for my head.

Thanks for the input guys. Much respect.

  11. Who'd a thunk burying the click could be so much fun and something I get excited about? HT is getting better.

  12. Sounds like they're Good. 😉 Sorry, couldn't resist.
  13. Ready for a long weekend. Unfortunately, I won't be around my kit. But I will have a pair of sticks with me.

  14. Looking at some of the later lessons in the BT and reading how others structure their practice has me feeling good about continuing on and learning more about our craft. 🤘😎🤘

  15. Tonight I took a suggestion from @chantale and made it work for me. A while back, she suggested "Wish You Were Here" and "Still Loving You" as slower songs to practice Common Kick Patterns too. I finally got around to adding the songs to my AnyTune app. I was able to slow them down and play the patterns while enjoying it much more. Tonight was the first time in a while that I felt like I was playing the patterns and enjoying them rather than just going through the motions.

    Thanks for that @chantale

  16. I've been assessing my practice/drumming and I had a thought today. I've been at the Shed for over 5 months and it dawned on me today that I've made pretty good progress all in all.

The first year I was learning, I couldn't finish a song at all. Today, I have like 5 songs that I can play pretty well even though they aren't at tempo.

This made me feel pretty good about my decision to join the Shed. Thanks to everyone for the support.

  17. Some days are great, some days are just OK. Life is life, but I still love drumming.

  18. Even though I'm not playing at tempo, or even completely correct, I'm having so much fun playing songs. Who'd a thunk I could be doing something this enjoyable? Drumming helps my mood almost as much as hanging out with my Grand-kids does.

Hi Robert, It’s amazing isn’t it! I feel exactly the same about it. It is just a complete escape. It doesn’t seem to matter how good or bad I am, it just takes me in to my own world for a while. Love it!

  19. I wanna buy more gear.  😉 😎 💵 🥁

  20. Sloppy night at practice, but I showed up. 😒

Take a long rest, sleep a lot and you'll be back. Were at my lowest on Friday, Monday was public holiday, and after two days sleeping a lot, felt great again. If only I could make myself go to bed early, I'd be just half as bad as I am 😄

Age and manual labor is a killer for me... Not to mention lack of sleep. 😎

  21. Kind of an interesting night. Just wasn't feeling anything at all today or tonight. Sat down for practice anyway, and tried a warm up song I haven't done in a while. Amazingly enough, I remembered the whole song without using the sheet music. And, I was able to play it pretty well. This made me think about another conversation that happened here previously talking about walking away from topics and coming back to them. What a great feeling. This propelled the rest of my practice to another level.

Then, I decided to adjust my ride to a crash level (since I don't have a 2nd crash) for playing Seven Nation Army. How much freakin fun was that? I absolutely nailed that song and had so much fun playing it tonight. Guess the shopping for a new crash will be happening soon. 😁

Hope your practice was as fun as mine!

So the question is will you be asking for permission or forgiveness? 😁 Good job on pushing through when not feeling it.

      Always ask for forgiveness. 🤣

  22. When it's slow at work, all I can think about is getting on my kit. And the day draaaaagggsss on. 😎

I look at it as giving myself the opportunity to be more creative and expand my knowledge base lol. It is all in how you spin it

Good point. I'll remember that when I'm asking for forgiveness for the money I've spent. 🤣

Sweetwater is a very dangerous place for me in terms of finances. I’m just a few hours drive from there so when I bought my kit I drove there to pick it up. Bad move. The place is incredible and very tempting. I had to force my self control to take over. 💰

  23. Last night felt good. Everything just seemed to groove and flow. I really like nights like that. Shows me the real progress I'm making thanks to everyone at the Shed.

Missed tonight due to life, but it's all good. I got to see the grand kids. They are my life, but drumming is pulling a very close 2nd.

    Respect

  24. Almost 2 months working on BM1 and I've made so much more progress than the previous year. My self learning was way out of whack.

Everyone here at the Shed has been so helpful on my journey. With any luck, I'll be playing an actual full song at speed and in time very soon. Until then, you get to listen to this version of a warm-up. 😉

    🤘🤘
