  3. Hi, I'm Bruce. I'm from Lansing, Michigan. I'm 66 years young and now have time to re-learn the drums. I once thought of myself as an intermediate drummer in the early 1990's. I have not played regularly in many many years. I practiced a little bit today but, it was not good. That's why I'm here. I want my drumming to become a source of fun again.

Hey Bruce!  Welcome to the shed!  It's ok if you spell NAVY backwards.  Just about everybody here spells my name backwards.  It's a fun and crazy place.

Welcome Bruce. I'm sure with SDS, a little time and practice and you will be back to intermediate. For myself this is something I wanted to do since I was a teenager. Now 74.

  4. Hello SDS Members,

I started playing drums at 68 years old and my energy level has exploded. My first drum set was a Birthday gift from my wife, and was a Beautiful GMS Blue Black Burst found at a local Drum Shop in Portland Me.

My interests are Funk and Jazz. I have a long way to play a solid Funk sound, but love the challenge. I am the drummer for Ideal Maine Social Aid and Sanctuary Band, a 2nd line NO Band and love the social and civic connection with the community. Playing the snare alone, while learning to play the complete set is a challenge as well.

Any 2nd line players or New Orleans Jazz players out there willing to share, please reach out.

  6. Greetings, all! Brand new, and ready to get started!

  7. Hi to all you fellow pure novices and my teacher Stephen. I am Paul a total beginner to a drum kit BUT always had that bass beat, tapping to the music in my head. I am 64 years young and live on a small island, Gozo part of Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean.

Looking forward to this new experience and to achieve getting the beat out of my head and played, with practice, on a medium that can push me into living that music on the DRUMS.

Take care of yourself and have fun, Paul

Welcome Paul. I was in Malta on a scuba diving trip some years ago. Beautiful place! And my in person class teacher tells me stories that there are some great Jazz musicians there and a lively and rich musical life. You are about to be part of it. Enjoy!

  8. How do I know what my drums should sound like?

You should ask on the forum, not sure how well posting on your profile reaches people on the site.

Compared to what you hear on recordings, the toms have a lot more sustain aka they ring or sound for a long time.

Thank you.  This was me in the beginning.  Sort of posting, but not trying to be way social.  I have gotten much better at socializing.

  9. I was thinking about Jimi Hendrix and how unorthodox his guitar playing was. Not only did he play a right handed guitar upside down left handed but he pushed every boundary of rock and roll. He often played under the influence of drugs and admitted it freely. Many consider him the greatest rock guitarist ever. There was an equally adventurous music pioneer who performed three decades earlier. Fueled by drugs and an incredible imagination not to mention impeccable technique was the saxophonist Charlie "Yardbird" Parker. Bebop jazz stretched traditional jazz grooves to their limits with speeds of over 200 bpm and incredibly complex harmonies and rhythms and Charlie, or Bird as most called him, was the best ever. I'm wondering if there is a drummer who has come along and defined a generation of drumming in the last 100 years. John Bonham comes to mind as does Max Roach and Art Blakey. Neil Peart should be considered. Any other suggestions?
  10. Hi Robert! I see in your profile picture we have another common interest: Japanese. I studied a bit on my own for some time, but instead as of with drumming, never took classes and I didn't get far. But it is still something that draws me a lot.

Dude. That’s awesome. It’s a pleasure to meet you too!   I lived there for several years studying Jujutsu. I spoke some and can recognize some kanjis but never really concentrated on writing and reading. My time with my Sensei was a gift.

I don't think so. I haven't stumbled upon one anyway.

  12. Hello , just checking out the site

  13. I’m not overly confident on swing percentages. I’ve heard the term and have, I think, a working definition, but I’m not entirely certain how it is applied when playing. It seems that is something done by feel, but I don’t know. Any insight or input is greatly appreciated. Thanks to this school, I’ve gotten more into jazz and want to develop a greater sense of what to listen for in jazz drumming.
  14. Preparation or lack thereof in the church is a struggle of mine. Sometimes I feel that the church is not putting in the work to operate with excellence! I have been put in that position many times!! Called at the last minute !
  15. I like to hear everyone’s thoughts on being payed versus serving! Particularly with the worship team! I’ve served for many years; sometimes the only drummer doing every service; conference: special guest services etc. Do you agree or disagree with paying your team? Why or why not?
  16. I'm sure I'm not alone in this feeling, but it feels like so many of your lessons outside of the established program come at just the right time! I'm currently placing some extra emphasis on fills, BAM! Awesome lesson in the inbox with sheet music just a week or two ago. I can't wait to see what you have cooked up in around a month.
  17. Ooohhh...I'll have to check them. Just recorded a 5 fun/easy metal songs lesson for the you tube channel that will drop in the next month or so.
  18. Orbit Culture dropped a three song EP today! If you haven't checked them out, I highly recommend them. EP is called The Forgotten

Ah, thank you - but I bet you didn't enjoy it as much as I enjoyed watching yours. Awesome performances! I wish I could play like you. And wish we could be back there right now - I miss you all so much!

  21. Hey Guys and Girls. I’m so excited I had to leave the ahead for a while but I’m back!!! I’m so pumped to get back into the swing of things God is Awsome!!! Stephen you and Grant are great and I’m so pumped!!!!!!!

  22. Oh my.  Thank you early COVID online colabs, apparently?  I just tripped over some drum stuff onto this gem.

  23. I stuck this on the fridge to remind myself what im working towards when i complete the beginner course. 20230720_183756.thumb.jpg.e169f184efb11d755af9160f173e19ff.jpgCame home from work to find this note from my wife pinned to it. 🤣🤣20230720_183832.thumb.jpg.1f70cde21aebfa388d9dd2d0e1228ed5.jpg

  24. I know I just started practicing but up until today practice has been going great. I was catching on pretty quick with the basic stuff. Then today, I was doing the same thing I was doing in my last practice and I just could not get it. I guess I shouldn't have taken the weekend off but dang that's annoying.

Don't worry about it. One day I can play paradiddles at 120bpm and the next can't get them right at 75bpm. The one thing that helps is setting the metronome so slow you can't mess up,and then build from there.

  25. Just got tickets for Reno, NV Sep 30th Steel Woods show.  Surprised and pumped to see ya'll getting dates out West.  Im here in norcal ElDorado, CA so less than a couple hours away.  Would be cool to meet up for a coffee.
