  1. Hi, I'm Bruce. I'm from Lansing, Michigan. I'm 66 years young and now have time to re-learn the drums. I once thought of myself as an intermediate drummer in the early 1990's. I have not played regularly in many many years. I practiced a little bit today but, it was not good. That's why I'm here. I want my drumming to become a source of fun again.

Hey Bruce!  Welcome to the shed!  It's ok if you spell NAVY backwards.  Just about everybody here spells my name backwards.  It's a fun and crazy place.

That prop kit is killer... especially if Buddy's head left a hole in the bass drum!

  4. @Juan awesome shuffle tunes and original songs by Body and The Soulers. I have a new band to follow. I appreciate your gesture Juan.

Por cierto, let me know when we can do a zoom face to face, or anyone for that matter, if they'd like to join in.

Much has happened. SDS level 2 is over...pumped up! I have also been playing with musicians and we already have our song list

Best of luck for you Juan and for all my SDS friends!

  6. I am taking a mental health break. I have a lot of tough things I’m dealing with right now. Nothing tragic, but just overwhelming. I can’t listen to music right now (just ambient nature sounds) and need to let myself just shut down a bit. I will be back, you know it!

I totally understand @Julia .  I’ll miss your wit and intelligence while you’re gone. You are a beautiful person and I’m sure you will find inner peace.

  9. Back in the saddle finally! Got some catching up to do after Covid but I feel great.  Following my practice pages religiously and staying patient! It's like starting a book and not peaking at the ending before you are done...lol!

Still loving this and getting a little bit better every practice.

  10. It was music lesson sign up day at the elementary school, and the shy, tall boy in the que was excited, although you wouldn’t know it from looking at him.  He was finally in 4th grade – the first year you could sign up for lessons.   Years of banging away on his sister’s toy oven, air-drumming to the Monkees, the Beatles, and of course, the drum solo from “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida,” were over.  He was going to be a real drummer!

It was his turn at last, and as he leaned over the table, the music teacher asked him what instrument he wanted to learn.

“Drums,” he said.  The music teacher rolled his eyes.

    “Oh no, not ANOTHER drummer.”

The music teacher poked the boy in the chest with his pencil.

“You’re a tall guy. How about the double bass.”

    It was not a question.

The shy boy felt like he had been kicked in the gut.  He was, by nature or nurture, non-confrontational, non-argumentative, with a tendency to let people walk all over him.

Dejected, he shrugged and said yes, but he never took a single bass lesson.  He never took a drum lesson.

The shy boy, obviously, is me - now a man of 64, approaching retirement and looking forward to the next chapter in my life.  Over the course of the years, I taught myself guitar and music theory.  I love the blues, blues-rock, roots/Americana and jazz. Still, even my guitar style is very rhythmic and percussive – I am still drawn to drumming.

So, I feel I owe that shy boy another chance.  I bought a beginner edrum kit – a Yamaha DTX452 – some sticks, a practice pad, and a few books.  I am working through “Stick Control for the Snare Drummer,” From his YouTube videos, I liked Stephen’s teaching style and personality, so I signed up!

I look forward to meeting you all and interacting with this community!

Hi @Greg and welcome to the shed.  I'm 69 and took up drumming two years ago after having played guitar and bass for fifty years.

I think you will find this teacher and his method are exactly what you are looking for.  Thanks for joining the community and hope to see you on one of the weekly Live Calls.

Welcome Jeff!  SDS takes all those You Tube videos and more and extracts a system that works.  Very focused and stripped to what is essential.  Enjoy and feel free to ask any questions!
