Maybe David could field submitted questions. And record it for replay. And figure out the one day that all of us can attend. We need to keep David busy. An idle mind...
  2. This Pick-My-Sticks challenge has been fun. It has made me play sticks I probably would not have paid any attention to. This challenge has also made me wonder what attribute a drumstick has that makes the most difference. Material, length, weight, tip shape and size, taper, diameter and coating if applicable. For me the weight of the stick is the most recognizable characteristic. When I pick up a new pair of drumsticks the first thing I will notice is how light or heavy they feel. The diameter of the sick is a close second and I still haven't figured out which diameter I prefer. Length is third and I have found I prefer 16.5 to 17 inch sticks. Tip configuration comes next and it seems smaller tips are better for jazz and low volume scenarios while medium to large tips are ideal for rock. The type of wood and how the wood surface is treated is not that important to me as I rough sand the part of the stick where my grip falls. Right now I'm using Vic Firth Jack DeJohnette signature sticks. They are basically 5a's but longer and have a slightly tacky white surface. Along with my trusty AJ6's these are my go to sticks
  3. Hey @Otis! I saw the Allman Brothers several times. Each time they played a song called Whipping Post. They never played it as recorded and each performance of it was different. This applies to many bands and musicians. Make it feel good and that will be your version!
  4. John Bonham was amazing at this. It's a nice skill if you lose your drumsticks.
  5. I have been using Vic Firth Peter Erskine Ride sticks for the last two months. Diameter of a 5b with a longer taper and small teardrop tip. The rebound is the best I've experienced in a drum stick. They feel very light and fast. In case you're not familiar with Peter Erskine he was a long time drummer for Weather Report and has played with hundreds of top musicians in his 30 year career.
  6. A double thank you David! This is a great video. Jojo's re-engineering of digital drums for live acoustic performance is one of the great trends in modern drumming.
  7. My wife handed me a mallet and a Vic Firth AJ6. Fortunately she didn’t see the brushes. Anyway I practiced with them. The results led me to believe that matched pairs of sticks are highly overrated.
  8. Today is my second drumming anniversary.  I received my first kit, an Alesis Nitro e-kit, on March 8, 2020.  That was also the day I joined Stephen's Drum Shed.  And that afternoon I learned the "money beat".

Since that day I have completed the Warrior Way and almost every other lesson in the SDS curriculum.  I started studying with Nate Smith at 80/20 Drummer, Jacob Evans at Drum Flow Coaching, and Rob Lee who is a professional player in St. Louis.

I've studied drumming and drum teachers now for two full years.  IMHO @Stephen and his teaching methods are second to none.  That's why I'm now a lifetime member.

Thank you Stephen Taylor, Grant Jenkins, Tim Buell, guest artists and all the supportive members of the SDS community.  I am having fun!

Congrats Bob. I'm coming on 2 years and haven't made near that progress. Good on you for doing so well. Respect.

Hey Bob! you sure have made every minute of those two years count, I would have sweared you were a life long player. I'm two years into this too, just a few days before you in fact, and have not yet completed the Beginner Track hahahaha. Need to find a snail picture for my profile photo 🤣🤣

Love it man! You're killing it.

  9. My go to stick has been a Vic Firth 5B which is 16" long. I just got the 5B Extreme version which is 1/2" longer. I REALLY like the longer stick. Makes me want to try their 17" freestyle sticks. Has anyone experimented with longer sticks? They do take a session or two to get used to them!
