I love a kickin’ tom groove. There’s just something tribal and organic about them.
I didn’t always love playing them though. It seemed like it took me the longest time to figure out how to construct a tom groove that felt good. Check out the lesson below and download the sheet music. After you watch it, review the 4 points that I make in the lesson.
How To Make Your Tom Grooves Not Suck

1. Have an anchor
2. Decide where the accents and emphasis will be in the beat
3. Know what you will be hitting at every point in the groove
4. Use parts of the groove to construct your fills. This will give it a more polished sound.
