  • When I improvise, I sing a melody in my head, transfer that to the drums and then work off the melodic theme and variations of that theme. To get a feel for it, I started with a simple melody like 3 blind mice or row row row your boat….something super familiar. Using different voices and varying subdivisions, I can usually come up with…[Read more]

  • Walt, if the speed is the issue, consider using longer notes….by that I mean if the tempo is 170, then 16th notes are 4x as fast, but whole notes are 4x slower. Consider playing something on the 1 or the 1 and 3 of every bar instead of each beat or even subdivisions of beats. If they guitarists have been killing it with tons of notes…[Read more]

I had an Export kit back in the 1990s. It had a 6.5” deep steel snare. I used a Remo coated cs reverse dot head. It gave a great sound in the center. To keep the honkiness and twang in check, I put a remo zero ring on it (they call them REMOS now). I tuned the drum a little low, but not so low that it sounded flappy or had bad stick response. I w…[Read more]

John, Yamaha’s stuff look like it may be proprietary. I sent Gibraltar and email asking them if they made and rack mounts that will work on a 7/8″ diameter down tube. I will let you know if/when I hear something back from them.

Leslie,  can you share with us some more info about your drum?  What is it made out of (maple, steel, brass, birch, some kind of wood, some kind of metal)?  What make and model of heads are on it (Remo Coated Ambassador, Evans G1 Clear etc.)?  What size is the drum 14″, 10″?  Are you tuning it high or low?  What type of rims do you have on it (d…[Read more]

  • Walt, Stephen posted some stuff about creativity recently that I thought was really profound.  Sometimes, we get so caught up in our drumming that we think sitting behind the kit working harder at being creative will cause us to be more creative.  Sometimes the opposite is true.  We have to get away from the kit and maybe away from music to fi…[Read more]

  • The groove track definitely exposed some issues for me. I discovered a lack of real control with my kick foot was seriously impacting my playing and feel.   That was the track that opened the door. Working that in combination with the various bass drum control tracks has made a big difference for me.   As far as creativity goes, I think the r…[Read more]

  • Pretty sure that is studio magic. To me it sounds like a bare drum hit with a ton of reverb on it that they are playing backwards. Just a guess though.

  • Aleksandar,  It is super cool that you jumped in with both feet.  You will love the drums.  Be sure to hit us up if you  have any questions along the way.  Everyone here is super helpful.
