How To Apply Rudiments To The Drum Set
The purpose of this 8 week course is to teach you a method that you can use with any rudiment to gain complete facility around the kit with it. It focuses on an organized creative assembly line that utilizes 5 different zones and combinations of those zones to take the rudiment around the kit. You will also learn to play the rudiment in different subdivisions, move the accents, and how to incorporate it into your grooves and fills.
  • Week 1: Video 1 - The Paradiddle: Playing the rudiment in different subdivisions; Moving the accents; Moving the rudiment methodically around the kit using an assembly line and zoning structure. Sheet music included. Video 2 - Practice Breakout Session: Bonus video on how to work through the Paradiddle exercises in your practice time, trouble shoot problem areas, and apply the rudiment to your grooves and fills.

Building A Vocabulary In Jazz
eThis 8 week course focuses on teaching you how to interpret melodies and phrases in your comping, fills, and soloing in the jazz genre. The method I use was designed and made popular by the late, great Alan Dawson. All of the methods taught in this lesson series can also be applied to the reading studies in the book "Syncopation For The Modern Drummer".

  • Week 1: Lesson series overview; Method 1: Phrasing & comping on the snare while playing the jazz ride pattern. Method 2: Phrasing and comping on the kick with rim click on beat 4 while playing the jazz ride pattern. Reading study included.
  • Week 2: Method 3: Solo/fill phrasing and improvising on the snare and toms with triplets filling in. Reading study included.
  • Week 3: How to interpret long versus short notes on the drum set; Method 4: Phrasing & comping on the snare and kick with emphasis on interpreting long vs. short notes while playing the jazz ride pattern. Method 5: Phrasing & comping on the snare and toms with emphasis on interpreting long vs. short notes while playing the jazz ride pattern. Method 6: Phrasing & comping on the snare only but beginning to incorporate buzzes to emphasize long notes while playing the jazz ride pattern. Reading study included.
  • Week 4: Method 7: Phrasing and comping on the kick with snare filling in all other triplet partials while playing the jazz ride pattern ; Importance of having big ears & focusing on being musical; Using space to create flow. Reading study included.
  • Week 5: Method 8: Solo and fill phrasing on the cymbals and kick with snare filling in triplets. Reading study included.
  • Week 6: Method 9: Solo and fill phrasing with triplets using snare for short sounds and kick/cymbals for long sounds, filling in all other triplet partials with unaccented snare. Method 10: Solo and fill phrasing with triplets using snare for short sounds and toms for long sounds, filling in all other triplet partials with unaccented snare. Singing jazz standards while going through exercises. Reading melodic lines on the drums. Discussion on different ride cymbal tones. Reading study included.

Method 14: Solo and fill phrasing with triplet rolls filling in, 4 on the floor in the kick, all short accents on snare, long accents on toms. Method 15: Solo and fill phrasing with triplet rolls filling in, all short accents on snare, long accents on toms. Reading study included.
