My name is Duane, and I’m in Denver, CO.  My wife and I have 4 grown sons, three of whom are married, and two of those couples have baby girls.  I’ve been in IT / Software Development since the late 90s, and prior to that I was a CPA.

I’ve been playing drums for about 8 years; almost exclusively jazz.  I play once a week with a small combo that’s part of the Colorado Jazz Workshop, an organization for mostly adults which consists of a few big bands and combos, each led by local professional musicians.  We perform a couple of times per year.  In my high school, college, and young adult years I played guitar, jazz piano, and bass.

Hey Duane. Welcome. Glad you are here. Sounds like you are killing it with your gig  What are your current musical goals?

Hey Marcus – thanks for your reply!  I need to improve my groove confidence, fluidity, and beat placement.  Sometimes when I listen to myself (I record most of our weekly rehearsals), I say to myself – “what was that”?  It sounds ragged.  Also, my soloing is pretty repetitive; I find myself stuck in similar themes and my execution is not that smooth.  So those are my core goals for now.

Great goals.  Definitely check out the groove series.  I found my playing sounded off as well and eventually realized it was because my kick drum timing was not where it needed to be.  I slowed down, focused on bass drum control and really placing subdivisions where they were supposed to go.  That has helped my feel quite a bit.  If you are looking for new inspiration on soloing, consider watching some of the lessons on applying rudiments to the drum set.  I wish you the best on those goals.  If I can be of any help, hit me up.

Thanks, Marcus – yeah, I’m diving in on the Groove series to start, while continuing to work on the Jazz Vocabulary track (which I had purchased separately a few weeks ago).  Thanks for your help!
